About White Tea
The Republic of Tea introduced rare 100% white tea to the West over two decades ago. Since this introduction, our white teas have remained a crown jewel of our tea collection and a favorite of our Citizens.
White tea is the least processed of all teas derived from the tea plant (Camellia sinesis). White tea’s sister varieties – black tea, oolong tea and green tea – are also derived from this plant. However, those varieties all go through roasting and oxidation processes that bring out different flavors and qualities in the tea leaves.
Our white tea leaves and buds are hand harvested just two days out of the year. These specific days are selected just before the leaves and buds unfurl. This delicate harvesting process ensures the young leaves and buds are still covered in fine white hairs. These fine hairs give white tea its name. The leaves and buds are then carefully air dried before they are packaged as full leaf loose tea or tucked into our unbleached tea bag rounds.
This intricate process creates a delectable tea that has a low amount of caffeine and is mellow, fragrant, fresh and sweet. The minimal processing of white tea means that it is especially rich in antioxidants – specifically, a type of polyphenols known as catechins. These catechins may help the body lower inflammation.*
The Republic of Tea is proud to offer 100% white tea that is grown in the mountainous Fujian province of China. We offer pure white teas as well as creative blends that celebrate the unique fresh flavors of white tea. You can purchase full leaf loose tea and tea bag varieties of white tea from The Republic of Tea. Read on to find the best steeping methods so that your cup of white delights your senses, every time.
Tips for Steeping White Tea
A delightful cup of tea begins with pure water. We recommend steeping your tea with filtered, spring or bottled water. This is especially important when savoring a white tea, as its delicate flavors can be easily overwhelmed by the minerals in most tap water.
When you heat your water for white tea it should be just shy of boiling – Around 170° is the perfect temperature. If your water does boil, simply let it cool down for a few minutes before adding the hot water to your white tea.
For an extra luxurious white tea drinking experience, preheat your teacup and teapot by pre-filling them with the hot water then pouring it out. This will keep your tea steamy and warm while you savor every sip.
Now it is time to steep your white tea. If you are using a tea bag steeping method, use 1 tea bag for each 6 oz of hot water. Perhaps take a moment to delight your senses by pausing to notice the subtle floral fragrance of the dry tea bag before pouring hot water over it. Let the tea bag soak in the hot water for between 30 and 60 seconds before removing it.
If you are steeping full leaf loose white tea, use one teaspoon of loose tea for each 6 oz of hot water. Make your tea steeping break a multisensory experience by pausing to notice the fine white hairs on the tea leaves before pouring the hot water over them. Let your white tea leaves steep in the hot water for 2-3 minutes before removing them using your preferred straining method.
Savor your white tea sip by sip rather than gulp by gulp®. Notice the nuances of the delicate white tea flavor. Imagine the striking Fujian mountain range where this tea was grown. Note if you would enjoy a stronger flavor the next time you have a cup of white tea, and adjust your steeping ritual accordingly. A longer steep will yield richer, deeper flavors, while a shorter steep keeps the tea light, subtle and refreshing.
